Follow a mysterious marine biologist down to the depths to study a whalefall at the bottom of the ocean. Photograph specimen, collect samples and discover more about your closed-off marine biologist as her mind unravels and she believes there is something down there with her.
You play as a marine biologist studying a rare phenomenon at the bottom of the ocean called a whalefall, a microecosystem that forms around the corpse of a whale in the deep ocean. Whalefalls are usually observed remotely by drones but the marine biologist you play as, Chessa, has been given the chane to study one in-person via an experimental capsule submarine. Study and document the whalefall by taking pictures of different species, collecting specimen and soil samples and writing reports, all while ignoring the feeling that you are being watched. Descend into madness and try to decipher whether this is all in your head or if there is actually something down there with you… something humanity has feared since the dawn of time.
Whalefall cycles between two main gameplay sections: the capsule and the research desk.
THE CAPSULE
A first-of-its-kind capsule created by IntactaTM that allows a scientist to study the deepest parts of the ocean floor in person. Chessa, who has volunteered for the position despite the company’s less than stellar reputation, is the first to try it.
Interact directly with the whalefall and the specimen that inhabit it, completing your research tasks by taking photos and collecting samples, while also managing mechanical malfunctions to ensure your survival.
THE RESEARCH DESK
A refuge from the horrors of the depths where Chessa winds down before bed…before the nightmares can get her.
Discover more about the mysterious character you play as and the situation she’s gotten herself into. Explore her research desk through point and click mechanics that allow you to interact with items for extra information and read through emails, notes, and logs that slowly piece together the story.
Whalefall explores the horrors of the ocean and our oldest anxieties about it. The story incorporates classic lovecraftian themes: the horror of the unknown and something lurking in the dark, cults who worship old gods and the insanity those who learn too much can eventually slip into.
While there is much horror to be found in the depths of the ocean: with its crushing pressures, icy cold depths and never ending darkness - there is also a sense of wonder and in documenting the alien world at the bottom of the ocean.
The story captures the genuine wonder and fascination of studying these strange and amazing creatures, encapsulating the thrill of discovery that urges humans to continue to expand our knowledge…even to our own detriment.
